Penment on PlayStation Has a Funny Oversight

  • Pentiment's transition from Xbox exclusive to PlayStation release comes with an oversight in regard to the game's Platinum Trophy name.
  • For whatever reason, there is no unique name for the Platinum, with the PlatinumTrophy placeholder text being present instead. Intriguingly, a unique picture does exist for the Platinum, so it seems like Obsidian simply forgot to come up with a title for the game's rarest achievement.
  • While the Platinum Trophy name oversight is odd, it ultimately isn't a huge deal for players in the long run.

After the recent release of Obsidian Entertainment's RPG Penment on PlayStation 4 and 5, gamers have noticed one hilarious oversight with this version of the game. Penment has had console exclusivity on Xbox since November 2022, and it seems Obsidian Entertainment missed one key detail during the transition to its new platform.

Penment is the newest RPG from iconic developer Obsidian Entertainment (previously behind Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords, Fallout: New Vegasand Pillars of Eternity, among other titles). Originally released in late 2022, Penment received positive reviews, with particular praise reserved for its unique art style and replayability. Like many games caught up in the console wars, it was originally an Xbox console exclusive alongside its PC version. However, Microsoft's recent strategy of bringing Xbox exclusives to other platforms has seen the game finally arrives on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 in the last couple of days.

Pentiment Sets the Bar for Decision-Based Games

Obsidian's unique title Pentiment showcases not only the breadth of the developer's talent but also the possibilities of choice-based gaming.

As first noticed by PushSquareit seems that the Platinum Trophy for Penment may have been neglected by the developer. The Xbox version of the game has 41 achievements to unlock in total, which sees players tackle some of the toughest choices in Penment. This is compared to the 42 on PlayStation, so the Trophy does exist for players who collect every other Trophy in the game. However, it uses the placeholder name, “PlatinumTrophy,” which is as basic as a name gets for this sort of thing. Interestingly, the Trophy does have a custom photo, meaning it wasn't completely forgotten by the developer.

Pentiment's Platinum Trophy

Trophy hunting is extremely important to many PlayStation gamers, just as achievement hunting is for Xbox players. Players are always on the lookout for the easiest Platinum Trophies to unlock with every new wave of releases, as they build up their profiles with as many Platinums as possible. While Penment's Platinum Trophy name oversight is odd, it ultimately isn't a huge deal in the long run. Hopefully, the studio is able to fix it with a patch in the coming days, with the game only being released a few days ago.

With Obsidian Entertainment currently occupied with its next two RPGs, Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2it remains to be seen if a sequel to Penment is planned in the future. Given the low budget compared to the studio's other titles, it's certainly not entirely out of the question. Some feel that Penment left its mark on the historical mystery genreand it'll be interesting to see if Obsidian Entertainment returns to the IP in the future and what innovations a potential follow-up could make.
