Death at 65 of Frank Darcel, co-founder of the Marquis de Sade group

The musician, also a collaborator with Etienne Daho on several of his albums in the 1980s, died at the age of 65 this week, announced Pascal Obispo.

The musician Frank Darcel, known for having co-founded the group Marquis de Sade and having collaborated with Etienne Daho, is dead, announced Pascal Obispo on Instagram. He was 65 years old. No cause of death has been released.

Son of a doctor born in Brittany, Frank Darcel decided at a very young age to turn his back on this path to devote himself to music. He was only 19 years old when he founded the rock group Marquis de Sade with singer Philippe Pascal.

Two albums – Danzig Twist (1979) and Siam Street (1980) – were released but met with confidential success. The group stopped in 1981 and Frank Darcel continued with another group, October.

At the same time, Frank Darcel accompanied the debut of a young singer who would quickly establish himself as the leading figure of Rennes rock which was exploding at that time: Etienne Daho.

From Daho to Rennes town hall

Guitarist on his first album Mythomaniac (1981), he produced the singles for him The Big Sleep And Fallen for France as well as the album La Notte, the notte which was certified double gold disc in 1985.

Frank Darcel then founded another group, Senso, with which he released various projects such as the album Along the river on which Pascal Obispo is singer. He also tried his hand at singing and released a solo album, ATAOin 1995.

When a fire alarm destroyed his eardrums in 2000, he moved away from the music industry and devoted himself to writing. He released half a dozen books and reformed Marquis de Sade in 2017, renamed Marquis upon the death of Philippe Pascal in 2019.

Favorable for Brittany's autonomy, Frank Darcel was a long-time member of the Breton Party and appeared on its list for the 2009 European elections. He also ran in 2020 for mayor of Rennes with the Breizh Europa movement.
