Sylvie Vartan's farewell to the stage: “I don't want the public to see me decaying”

Sylvie Vartan and the scene is a beautiful story that is about to end. The mother of David Hallyday and Darina Scotti-Vartan will give one last big meeting with his fans, at the Dôme de Paris next November with three concerts. Then she will bow out. A decision that she justifies by the fear of seeing herself diminished on stage in the future, as she has already confided on the set of Dailyand which she explains again in an exclusive interview given to Paris Match (interview available in their today's edition, this Thursday, February 1, 2024).

“On the last night, I will surely be heartbroken. We have to go through that. Once again, I don't want the public to see me decaying, it's also a question of respect for them. Then I am very demanding of myself.“A choice that was difficult to make:”For several years, I had been procrastinating. I have always done everything with passion, without calculation, just out of desire and without asking myself too many questions. Because deep down I don't like at all what ends, I don't like departures, I don't like what stops.“

But she has no regrets: “I started on stage, I have to finish on stage. It's a question of elegance. For now I still have the voice, the physical strength to present myself in front of the public. But I don't want to do too many concerts. I will be 80 next August.” She therefore says “goodbye” to the stage, but that does not mean that she is putting a definitive end to her brilliant career as a singer. She does not forbid herself from “making another record.” Only, her priorities are now elsewhere: “I have so much in my private life to catch up on: all these books I haven't read, these films I haven't seen…I will also be able to take care of my grandchildren, and even from my great-grandson.”

Tony Scotti, married to “the best wife”

Note that our colleagues also spoke with Tony Scotti, her husband and father of Darina. He states in particular that this decision by Sylvie Vartan has “matured over the months”, and then returns to their meeting and his lack of “knowledge of French music” at the time, which “came down to Charles Aznavour”. As for its comparison with Johnny Hallyday which Sylvie Vartan clearly heard known before him, he says he had, and still has, “enough confidence” in himself not to “suffer” from it. The two men even ended up getting along very well: “I considered him like a little brother.“He also took very good care of his son David, becoming his “surrogate father.”

Finally, regarding his relationship with Sylvie Vartan, Tony Scotti is very enthusiastic: “For forty years, I have had the best wife. Really, I appreciate how lucky we are to still laugh together.
